Lincoln, NE Cross Weekend.....

What a weekend of cross this past weekend in Lincoln, NE. Coach, Jeri, and me and Margie all made the trip up north. It was a blast. Saturday started out with coach racing in the masters class and he eventually had to pull out of with damage to his bike and body.....looked like he had gotten into a fight with a tiger and lost. Both knees were swollen and bloodied. He decided to pull out and get ready for the Cat 3/4 race. He had a much better race placing 10th in a large group. Next up ...

Momma nature finally brought some cross weather to the final stage of the DeStad Series at Leavenworth today. Temps started dropping and it started spitting rain during the warm up. Drizzle soon turned to rain. The course had lots of twisty turns that soon became grease pits with lots of carnage. Roadies were not digging this course.

I took a major crash right from the get go on the first muddy turn coming of the pavement start. I had to get up and ride through all the riders that passed ...

Some of our local "crossers" headed over to Topeka and raced under the lights at the Heartland Race Track. That was some blazing fast racing and the course was a blast.

Part of the course was outside the track area in the grassy sections and then wound around and back into the track. They had built a set of stairs that you had to dismount and run up to get over the wall and then remount and ride down a ramp.

The pace was crazy fast and one mistake and you were left behind. ...

I'm sitting here this morning digesting the race at the Berryman yesterday, and moving this sore old body about every minute.

All the "home boys" finished, and that was quite a feat in itself as the 2009 BTE was truly epic. We knew it was going to be epic when we could see all the streams flowing full bank on the way down. When we arrived at Bass River Resort and went to check into our A frame rental, the water from the "flooding river" was lapping at the road we needed ...

Prepping the bike. Sorting the gear. Doing "what if" scenarios in my head and making lists. That is what separates epic races from the typical cross country types.

"Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail!" I've found out this the hard way, earning my lumps. I'm heading back to the Berryman because of some unfinished business that resulted from lack of prep and planning. It was a long drive home last year after finishing a race I could have won in my age group. I finished about ...

The Green Hills region was represented well at the cross race in KC. We had two newbies toe the line and learn some of the ins and outs of cross racing.

Denny and Mitch raced the Cat 4 race (beginner) and it had the largest field of the day. The race was only 30 minutes long but someone ask Mitch and Denny how long it felt.

I think the boys learned why it is important to start fast and get out of the crowd. Plus, with a 30 minute race, when you don't start fast, you run out of time ...

What a weekend of racing at what will soon become the mecca of trails in the KC area. The venue and facilities were top notch and both races had large fields.

The KC Cup Cross event on Saturday had almost 170 racers and the course was challenging and fun. This course favored mountain bikers with all the technical features.

Just got back from Columbia where I won the age 30-39 Beginner class race. The race was a 8 mile loop of amazing trail. I had been watching the results of all the MWFTS races and one guy was always at the top, my goal was to stick with him this race. We jumped out to a quick pace and quickly caught the 20-29 age group and some of the marathoners. I was riding his wheel and pacing myself for the 2nd lap...my endurance is not quite there and I wanted some in the tank for the end. 16 miles ...

The results from the Fat Tire Festival in Eureka Springs are finally up, I love to sit down with a pad of paper, pencil, and a calculater and go through the results. I can do this for a couple hours pretty easily. I'm sure most people know that I cut a sidewall about 3.5 miles into the 18 mile race but Stan's did it's job and sealed the air leak. I did have to stop 3 times to put air into the tire, I think I could have got away with just once if I had been more calm. Also stopped another ...

Actually for me I never went completely flat, I cut a sidewall about 3.5 miles into the 18 mile race but it did seal back up. I had to stop and put air into it 3 times but she held to get me thru to the end of the race, I stopped several times to squeeze the tire because it was constantly in the back of my mind. The one good thing about my butt whipping was that the guy that took 2nd last year, from Evergreen, Colo., won the title and he is such a nice guy and well deserving. I'm sure we are setting up some future battles on a course that is not in the clouds.

I wonder if Rick knows that he could serve charcoal and sticks at the meal after the race and a lot of people wouldn't even care? I had to slow down eating after the race last year when I realized I was chewing on my fingers.

I have a question about dismounting for cyclocross. If you dismount to the left side, do you unclick your left foot before you transfer to the left side or do you do it right before you step off the pedal? The reason I ask is I have not practiced this before, I just gave it a whirl at Cruise The Blues and just about bit it hard. There were 4 of us fighting for position as we neared the shoot where we had to dismount before we ran through the scoring table. I was in second position and the ...

Congratulations are in order for Tim, Mitch, and Mark for surviving the travel weather conditions and participating in the Lumberjack 100.

I hear they had to ford water to just get to the race site. I'll be curious to hear their "Epic" tales of the race. I know they've been training for this event for a long time. The Leadville 100 was one of the toughest events I've ever done, if not the toughest. I was shelled at the end.

Give us the skinny on your trail adventure!

Just returned from the "Syllamo's Revenge" and the 2008 edition was the toughest ever. Although the course is right at 50 miles, with 99.9 % single track, Arkansas has had record rain and it amped the challenge this year.

The Mountain View area received close to 2 inches of rain Friday morning as the storm system moved through. The trails are gravely/rock based type tread, but there was high creek crossings and sections of muddy rock that took it's toll on riders.
