That was one of the toughest courses in the Midwest/Midsouth. If you want to "raise the bar" and are into rock, ledges, creek crossings, challenging climbs, and everything that is "old school" mountain biking, this is your race!
Many sections of the course reminded me of Landhal with the rock and ledgy stuff, except harder. I cleaned everything at least once but never in the same lap.
I burped a tire in the first lap and got passed by two guys in my class. I caught them second lap only to take a major "digger" when I tombstoned in one of the technical cracks that you could either ride or walk. I gambled and lost on that lap. I ended up over my handlebars and into the rocks landing on my hip, knee, and shoulder. I stayed down awhile and got passed. I got on it again and eventually caught one and thought I had the other in front of me. To my surprise, as I caught him, it was someone else in the younger class in a blue jersey and I ended up 2nd. I'll take it!! Tough 50+ class and the top 3 in the 50+ finished ahead of all the 40-49 expert racers. When we started catching the 40-49 racers, one of them made the comment that he was going to be in our class next year. My comment was: "Is that a good thing, since we are passing all the 40-49 racers?" His comment: "That's a good point!"
