IC Trail Update Empty
PostSubject: IC Trail Update   IC Trail Update Icon_minitimeSat Mar 27, 2010 8:27 am

I've been busy at IC the past 4 days walking, re-walking, climbing high and low, checking drainage, etc.... and flagging the new proposed corridor for the next trail build phase.

I've walked these contours a hundred times over the years and there are some very unique rock formations and scenic views that are potential control points. There are a couple of areas where there is more than one contour to build on with higher-flowing and fast, lower-more technical and scenic. It has been a good time to get out and see where the water is going and which areas dry faster.

I'll be curious to put a GPS on the route to see how much mileage it will be adding. The new section will cross one access road and access the north campground off Rt. A. If I have enough time, I plan on extending the flagging over to the access road that has a gravel parking lot on the southeast of the north campground. This will give numerous options for loops and also access to the service roads on the ridge and over to North Poosey from the North Campground.

While I was out in the area, I stopped at the sawmill on Rt. U and inquired about planks for bridging. They had some that were cut the wrong length and I have a chance to purchase them for a big savings and leave them there till I need them. I'm probably going to go with that idea.

Phil and I will walk the new flagged area on Tuesday and then I'll know if we can get busy! I have my fingers crossed. This new section is going to put a smile on your face!

I absolutely love that you guys make good use of rock, exposure and control points. People seem to fear rock in these necks of the woods.

When you get the thumbs up to start building, please keep me posted about trail work days. I'd really like to get some hands on experience with the process.

The walk through went very well and we had a perfect day.

Phil Sneed, our land manager at Poosey, "wears a lot of hats" as he has to work with so many special interests and also work within his management plan for the area. Phil has been wonderful to work with and knows that the GHTA has continued to maintain all our trails and take ownership. That makes it easier to seek permisision to add trails as our reputation preceeds us.

Phil felt the corridor would help fulfill one of the conservations new goals of connecting campgrounds with trail corridor. That said, he will seek approval from the regional office and let me know what he finds out.

If we get the word to go, I talked to Phil about looking at a calendar and planning at least two large organized work weekends that I can publicize and host crews for those weekends at the educational center off 510. They would be Sat-Sun. work days and we would include social activites and rides into the weekend.

This is just the start to more great things at Indian Creek.

Right now, we need to maintain what we have. This time of year always means corridor to clear of trees and debris and work on water crossings, reroutes, etc....

If we get permission to expand, I'll be contacting everyone!
