So I'm kicking myself for not heading out that way for Memorial Day. Frugality and good old fashioned shame kept things closer to home. I'd have been embarrassed to cross paths with any of the Green Hills Tribe as I've still done nothing too significant towards getting into respectable shape. There is also something satisfying about rides that start from the door step. So I rode Sugar Creek instead, thinking I'd save the ozone layer a tanks worth of fumes from the ol' petro beast and save a few bucks at the same time. As it turns out though I destroyed my brand new derailleur instead on a ride whose only real merit is that it's a good work out. Sugar Creek used to have a few nice sections of single track, but they've been buried years ago under bulldozer tracks. (The Conservation Departments idea of trail maintnance here is to go out a couple times a year and tear the holy hell out of everything from the cab of a bulldozer)

Well I guess that's enough crying for now. Hopefully the rain clouds part long enough for things to dry out so I can get out that way.

On a side note: I have only put in a couple of days work so far this year at Thousand Hills. It's daunting to know that it needs at least a thousand more.

Happy Trails.

Sorry to hear about your derailleur. Is Sugar Creek the conservation area on the end of the state park trail over there?

The last time I was over there I ended up riding all over the place in some field trying to figure out where I was at. I didn't want to ride back on the trail as all the water bars were eroded out and part of the trail was about to drop into the river/creek from all the flooding.

Unfortunately, much of the Thousand Hills trail is in great need of rerouting with lots of planning in regard to where water is going to go. We've got our share of reroutes to do at IC and Crowder. We are getting a new Sup at Crowder and have our fingers crosses that we get one of our locals on at the park. He is a mtn. biker and trail runner and one hell of a trail builder.

See my post about IC and you will get the skinny on some of our challenges at IC.

Big Creek is the CA on the other side of the park trail. Those areas along the creek bank fall away more and more each year and are very near to being inpassable.

Sugar Creek CA is out on county N -- approx. ten miles of god awful horse trail.

I stopped when I saw the word "horse"!

I love animals including horses. I'm not too fond of some of the riders that choose to take to the trail in wet conditions. I've almost come to the conclusion that it is impossible to build a sustainable horse trail in north Missouri, unless it has zero grade, graveled, and has someone to enforce trail closures.

It's hard enough to maintain regular trails!
