So I went out Sunday for a combination rekon/anniversary ride. Things where plenty soft in places -- not exactly responsible riding -- but the bottom has not completely dropped out yet. What I'm wondering is, what's the best practice for rebuilding small "gully" crossings that have washed out and become 3-5 foot deep pits (we also have two washed out bridges and a third that looks like its days are numbered)? The number of major projects to tackle here is daunting, daunting and kind of exciting.
I decided while out this weekend that I'm setting my benchmark for matching hours riding the trail to hours maintaining the trail. There's lots of work to be done, but that will also mean that there will be lots of riding to do as well.

Looking forward to the return of sweet trails close to home (though my heart really is at home on all sweet trail)

Continuing on the thread about matching ride time to maintenance hours: So far my hours out riding on the trail tally to a few days worth of pushing the mower. I'm thinking this year though to tackle shorter sections with a hand held trimmer instead of larger sections with the high-wheel.

Its hard to juggle time between riding and trail work. The fact that trail maintenance has to be done will never change. I spent 3.5 hrs mowing and trimming Tuesday night, the whole time I was wishing I could have rode instead. I believe this is the main reason you see lots of people road riding....they have no responsibility that way. Get on the bike, ride, repeat. Blah, blah, blah.

I'm not sure if it makes me wierd or not, but I actually enjoy mowing trail (except for the mile hike out on one of the legs -- a real beast after five hours out with the Swisher, especially because the first half mile climbs 200 some feet and starts out with 40-or-so yards of 25plus% grade Twisted Evil )

Things are pretty wooly out there right now. The hard thing for me to juggle is work and weather. They never seem to align too well in my favor. You know what they say about excuses though. Perhaps all I need is some mental beano.

Enough rambling for now. Happy Trails.
