I ran into one that had me stumped for quite a while the other day. I put a new 9 speed cassette on a bike that was 7 speed. Without thinking I just used the cassette lockring from the 7 speed cassette. Well the highest gear (smallest sprocket) kept skipping.

After more time than I care to admit I finally realized that the old 7 speed lockring is taller than the one that came with the 9 speed cassette and was causing this, don't do this! Very Happy

Jon,
You and I must have graduated from the same school: "Hard Knocks High School!"

That is how I tend to learn most everything cycling. Cycling was meant to be simplistic transportation but technology and competition will always be raising the bar. Single Speeds can be built simple and light but I sure like my full suspension carbon epic for riding all day.
