So our local Wal-mart has started carrying a decent looking mtn bike tire. In the time honored tradition of the payday binge I'm going to pick up a pair and see what they are all about. I'm hoping that with their moniker of "Kingpin," they will reanimate the old skateboarder in me and remind me that I used to have some hops. (The safest bet though would be laying off the barley pop and oat soda style hops drunken )

Now lets not go get crazy and get rid of the barley pops.....that would have to be considered some kind of terrorism! Laughing

Laying off the barley pops would be a bit over the top. Some say that's how the pyramids were made -- beer and bread (and plenty of whip lashings) farao
So I've only been out for one ride so far on the new treads. Mounted they run closer to 2inches than their claim of 2.25, but I think they run a bit tall. They seem to pick up a lot more leaves than my Velociraptors. On an up note though, those leaves sound a lot like a chainsaw. I've always found my level of annoyance to leaves in my chainstays or forkcrown to be a good indicator of how near I am to being overtrained/overstressed.

Happy Trails.

So I've been running those walmart "kingpins" for nearly a year now and have been pretty satisfied with them -- no sign of my old skateboarding days hops though. (I think they were retired the first time I tried to air it out and crashed so hard my handlebars broke. Luckily I'm seventeen years older and wiser and keep those tires as close to the ground as possible.) So this walmart tire is a rebranded CST. I'm tempted to check out some of their other offerings. They even offer a UST tire now that looks a lot like a small block eight, but it only comes in a 2.1.

To continue on the beer, bread, and whiplashes thread: I'm thinking those might be appropriate names for the creek reroute we worked on last summer if that switchback gets put on a set of virtual rails with a giant cribwall -- maybe call the whole section the gaza strip or something like that. At any rate it would all be a nod to labors of love, not endentured servitude or anything like that.

Happy Trails. Here's hoping they dry up soon.

Hey Jeff,

I went out to IC yesterday and walked through on the proposed section, starting at the north campground and heading south. Seems like every time I walk through I see a new twist to possible route. Part of the proposed route is in an area that was engulfed in a fire last fall/winter just before the start of deer season. You can really see the contours and rock formations that may usually be covered with leaf growth, etc...

I walked all the way up and short cutted over to my section and walked through and threw off debris. I was surprised how little debris there was for the most part. We've had some wicked winds this winter. The deer have been busy traversing the trail corridor and burning in the tread. Just reminds me why you have to build trail next to the edge with out slope. If you don't the tread will eventually end up with a valley from all the game traffic. All you have to do is examine the trail where we have benched it vs. where we just removed vegetation with a weedeater, etc... The tread dries faster in areas where the top layer of mineral soil is removed. Of course, much of that depends on the type of soil. Up here where we have very erosive soils, you really have to plan the corridor well and make sure you are building next to the edge with good outslope for drainage and use lots of grade reversals, etc..

The trail is still muddy from rain this week and freeze-thaw cycle. The creeks are running and are very tranquil. The new section is really going to highlite those creeks.

Can't wait till things start drying up over here.
